Violence should never be tolerated in the workplace

Statement from the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour

The incident at a Halifax Hospital in Halifax serves as a stark reminder of the challenging conditions our health care workers face every day. These dedicated individuals put their lives on the line to care for others, and it is critical that we prioritize their safety and well-being.

Our hearts go out to the injured staff, as well as their loved ones and colleagues, during this incredibly difficult time. We would like to extend our deep gratitude to the brave individuals on-site who acted swiftly to bring the situation under control. Their quick response not only prevented further harm but also exemplifies the unwavering dedication and resilience of our health care workforce.

As unions, we have long been advocating for improved safety measures in our health care facilities for a long time. Our government must take immediate action to address these pressing safety concerns. Violence should never be tolerated in the workplace, or anywhere and we demand that appropriate charges be laid against those who perpetrate such acts.

We call for a zero tolerance policy on violence and harassment within our health care system and workplaces. Every worker deserves to be safe while doing their job, and it is our responsibility to ensure that these standards are upheld.

We invite everyone to join our campaign by sending a letter to your elected officials, urging them to take decisive action in support of our health care workers. https://nslabour.ca/campaigns/violence-and-harassment-are-not-part-of-the-job/

By sending a letter you can make a difference and create a safer environment for all. We can do better, and it starts with standing up for those who care for us. Let’s work together to ensure that our health care workers are protected and valued in their crucial roles.
