Statement from the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour on International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples
On this International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL) stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities across Mi’kma’ki, Turtle Island, and around the globe. Today, we recognize the rich cultural heritage, profound wisdom, and enduring resilience of Indigenous peoples who have sustained their cultures, languages, and traditions despite centuries of colonial oppression, dispossession, and systemic injustice.
As workers and labour leaders, we acknowledge that Indigenous peoples’ struggles are deeply interconnected with the fight for workers’ rights, social justice, and equality. The injustices faced by Indigenous communities, whether in the form of land theft, environmental degradation, or the continued disregard for treaty rights, harm us all. The fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and the right to organize must go hand in hand with the struggle for Indigenous sovereignty, self-determination, and justice.
On this day, we renew our commitment to reconciliation and justice, understanding that true solidarity means actively working to dismantle the structures of oppression that continue to harm Indigenous communities.
This year’s theme, “Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination,” powerfully reminds us of the critical role that young Indigenous people play in shaping the future. We are inspired by the leadership of Indigenous youth who are at the forefront of movements for climate justice, cultural revitalization, and political change. Their courage and vision give us hope and challenge us to do more in our advocacy and action.
The NSFL reaffirms our commitment to working alongside Indigenous communities to promote and protect their rights. We will continue to advocate for policies addressing the social, economic, and environmental injustices Indigenous peoples face. This includes supporting Indigenous-led initiatives, fighting for the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and pushing for more vigorous enforcement of treaty rights and Indigenous land protections.
Today and every day, we honour Indigenous peoples’ strength, resilience, and contributions. We stand with you in your ongoing struggle for justice and equality. Together, we can build a future where all workers, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, can live and work with dignity, respect, and fairness.
