NSFL responds to the Provincial Government decision to take away flex time

August 12, 2024

The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL) expresses deep concern and disappointment in response to the recent decision by Premier Houston’s government to remove flex time for public sector non-union workers. This sweeping change threatens the well-being and work-life balance of hardworking Nova Scotians and represents a significant setback for labour rights in our province.

Flex time has been a vital tool for workers to balance their personal and professional lives, accommodating diverse needs and responsibilities. The arbitrary removal of this essential benefit will undoubtedly place undue strain on workers across Nova Scotia, undermining their ability to manage family obligations, educational pursuits, and health concerns, among other pressing matters.

President of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, Danny Cavanagh stated, “The government decision to take away flex time is a regressive step that will harm workers and their families. Flex time has been a lifeline for many individuals, allowing them to navigate the demands of modern life while contributing meaningfully to the workforce. Its removal is a direct attack on the well-being of Nova Scotians.”

Furthermore, the NSFL firmly believes that these actions will inadvertently drive unorganized workers to seek the protections and representation of a union. As traditional labour rights are eroded, workers will increasingly turn to the collective strength and advocacy of unions to safeguard their rights.

The NSFL remains committed to defending the rights of all workers in Nova Scotia and will continue to advocate for fair and equitable labour practices across the province.
