Nova Scotia Federation of Labour Statement on National Correctional Officers Week May 4-10
The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour is proud to recognize and honour the hard work and dedication of Nova Scotia’s correctional officers during National Correctional Officers Week.
These men and women are critical in keeping our communities safe and supporting those in the justice system. Correctional officers work in one of the most challenging and most demanding professions. Every day, they face complex and often dangerous working conditions to ensure public safety, maintain order, and support rehabilitation efforts within our correctional facilities. Their job requires strength, resilience, compassion, professionalism, and commitment. Unfortunately, Nova Scotia’s correctional officers are currently the lowest-paid in Canada. This is unacceptable.
These dedicated workers deserve fair compensation that reflects the challenges and risks they face every day. Low wages not only undervalue their contributions but also make it harder to attract and retain skilled officers, putting even more strain on an already challenging job. In addition to fair pay, correctional officers urgently need better working conditions and access to resources that support their safety and well-being. This includes adequate staffing levels, improved training, and mental health support to help them manage the unique pressures of their work. No one should put their health and safety on the line without the proper tools and support to do their job effectively.
The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour stands in solidarity with correctional officers as they call for better working conditions, fair compensation, and the resources they need to succeed. These workers are an essential part of our justice system, and they deserve respect and support for their critical work. During National Correctional Officers Week, we encourage all Nova Scotians to take a moment to recognize the contributions of correctional officers in our province. Join us in thanking them for their service and standing with them in their fight for fairness, safety, and dignity.
