Statement from the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

May 5, 2025

On May 5, we honour and remember the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people. This day is also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). It is a time to reflect on the injustices faced by Indigenous communities and to demand action to end this national crisis. Indigenous women and girls who face violence at rates much higher than non-Indigenous women. This is not just a statistic – it is a heartbreaking reality that affects families and communities here in Nova Scotia and across the country.

Each life lost is a daughter, a mother, a sister, a friend, and a vital part of their community. The pain and loss are immeasurable. In Nova Scotia, we must acknowledge the ongoing colonial history that has contributed to this crisis. The impacts of racism, poverty, and systemic discrimination continue to harm Indigenous people. These issues are made worse by the lack of resources and support for Indigenous women and girls, especially in rural and remote areas of our province. The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour stands in solidarity with Indigenous communities and families who have lost loved ones. We recognize the calls for justice outlined in the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls’ final report.

These calls must be acted upon to ensure the safety, dignity, and rights of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people. We call on all levels of government, including the Nova Scotia government, to take immediate action to address this crisis. This includes ensuring access to housing, education, healthcare, and justice for Indigenous communities. It also means working with Indigenous leaders to address the root causes of violence and inequality. Today, we wear red to honour the lost lives and show that we will not forget. The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour is committed to standing with Indigenous communities to create a safer, more just society for all. Together, we can and must make change happen.
