The NSFL stands shoulder to shoulder with the more than 4,000 unionized tradespeople who are on strike across Cape Breton
President Danny Cavanagh joined the striking workers on the lines today in Sydney. These workers, represented by the Cape Breton Island Building and Construction Trades Council, have taken a stand because they have had enough. They are asking for fairness, the ability to keep up with inflation, support their families and live with dignity. These are the same workers who showed up every day during the pandemic, building our hospitals, our schools, and significant infrastructure, while others worked from home. They kept the industry moving through some of the most challenging times we have seen. Now, they are being told to accept less. Delayed negotiations, lowball offers, and a lack of respect have left them with no choice but to walk off the job.
The cost of living continues to rise, and these skilled tradespeople are struggling to keep up. That is not acceptable. When workers earn fair wages, they spend that money in local businesses and service shops across Cape Breton. These are jobs that support families and contribute to the overall strength of the economy. Union jobs build more than buildings. They make a stronger GDP, a stronger community, and a more stable Cape Breton.
These workers are the backbone of our construction industry, and they deserve respect, fair wages, safe conditions, and job security. The employers need to return to the table and negotiate in good faith. No more delays. No more disrespect. You deserve a fair deal.
