NSFL Statement on International Paramedics Day – July 8th

July 8, 2025

Today, on International Paramedics Day, we recognize and thank paramedics for the vital work they do every single day, especially our dedicated members here in Nova Scotia.

Paramedics are the ones who show up when we need them most. Whether it’s a life-threatening emergency or a crisis in a remote rural community, they bring knowledge, skill, and calm under pressure. Their ability to think fast, make critical decisions, and care for people in some of the most challenging situations is nothing short of extraordinary.

In Nova Scotia, our paramedics continue to step up despite growing pressure in the healthcare system. They face long hours, understaffing, burnout, and delayed offload times at overcrowded hospitals. Yet, they show up every shift and every call with professionalism and compassion.

It’s time the government and employers show up for them, too. Too many of our frontline paramedics are pushed to the limit. Staffing shortages, poor working conditions, and low morale are driving good people out of the profession. Fixing these issues isn’t just about supporting paramedics; it’s about supporting the entire healthcare system. It’s about protecting patients and communities across the province. We need urgent investment in recruitment, retention, fair compensation, and safe working conditions.

Today is an opportunity for all of us to express our gratitude. But words aren’t enough. Recognition must come with real change. We encourage all levels of government in Nova Scotia to listen to paramedics and their unions. They’ve been calling for solutions for years on everything from better mental health support to fair scheduling and resources in rural areas. We stand with them.

To every paramedic working in our cities, towns, and rural communities, thank you. Your strength, your sacrifice, and your commitment to public service do not go unnoticed. You are essential workers in every sense of the word, and today, we honour everything you do to keep our communities safe. On behalf of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour and our affiliates, we extend our deepest gratitude: thank you for your service.
