NSFL President joins Dalhousie Faculty Members on the picket line
Danny Cavanagh, President of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, will be joining members of the Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA) on the picket lines today in Halifax to show solidarity with the more than 1,000 professors, instructors, librarians, and counsellors who the university has locked out.
“It is shameful that Dalhousie University has chosen to lock out its faculty members while they were in the middle of voting on an offer,” said Cavanagh. “This heavy-handed move is unfair and unnecessary. It not only disrespects the bargaining process but also hurts students who are counting on their education.”
The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, representing over 70,000 union members across the province, stands firmly behind the DFA members. “Our Federation and all our members support these workers in their fight for fairness,” said Cavanagh. “We are calling on Dalhousie’s management to end this lockout and respect the collective bargaining process.” Faculty members are dedicated professionals who give their time and energy to teaching and supporting students. The decision of the bosses to lock them out undermines good-faith negotiations and puts the university’s reputation at risk. “We cannot understand why the university would choose this path instead of allowing the bargaining process to play out,” added Cavanagh. “The solution is not to shut faculty out of their classrooms, but to get back to the bargaining table and work towards a fair agreement.”
