National Acadian Day – August 15

August 15, 2025

Every year on National Acadian Day, we come together to celebrate the rich history, vibrant culture, and enduring contributions of Acadians in Nova Scotia and across the country. Today, the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour honours the Acadian people and recognizes how their traditions, resilience, and community spirit have shaped our province for generations.

Acadians are a vital part of Nova Scotia’s heritage. Their presence dates back more than four centuries, and their story is one of endurance, pride, and hope. From humble beginnings, Acadians faced significant struggles, including the tragic Deportation, yet their spirit never wavered. They rebuilt their communities, preserved their language, and kept their culture alive. Today, their unique identity, music, festivals, and stories continue to enrich the fabric of Nova Scotia.

Our provincial landscape is dotted with Acadian communities from Clare and Argyle to Chéticamp and beyond that proudly carry forward their traditions. Acadian workers, families, and organizations are important to our economy, especially in sectors like fishing, agriculture, education, and tourism. Their contributions reach far beyond the workplace, inspiring social justice, community involvement, and the fight for equality.

The Federation of Labour believes that the strength of Nova Scotia lies in its diversity. Acadians remind us how important it is to build bridges, welcome difference, and stand together. In workplaces and unions all across Nova Scotia, Acadians bring their own sense of solidarity, cooperation, and mutual respect. By celebrating Acadian culture, we honour the values of inclusion and fairness that are at the heart of our labour movement.

On this special day, we encourage everyone to learn more about Acadian heritage: visit local museums, attend cultural events, and support Acadian businesses. Join us in thanking Acadian unions and workers who foster positive change daily. Let’s work together to make sure their language, culture, and workplace rights are protected and respected.

The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour stands in solidarity with all Acadians today and every day. Your history is our history. Your pride is our pride. Together, we will keep building a province where every community thrives and every worker has a voice.

Happy National Acadian Day!

NSFL welcomes new harassment protections. These changes are progress, but it’s not the finish line.
