Statement by the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour on the opening of the Public Service Pension Plan (PSSP)

October 17, 2023

The recent decision to expand the Public Service Pension Plan (PSSP) by allowing new members from various workplaces, including those currently without a pension plan, is a significant and positive development. As a proud member of the PSPP, having transferred to it a few years ago, I can personally attest to the security and peace of mind of being part of a well-established and robust defined benefit plan.

The opportunity to extend membership to those lacking a pension plan is exciting and commendable. It ensures that many more hardworking Nova Scotia workers can now access a solid retirement plan operated by a dedicated board of trustees, where workers have a voice in the plan’s administration.

Access to a defined benefit plan is a tremendous advantage for workers, providing them with a reliable and predictable retirement income. Unlike other retirement plans, such as contribution plans, a defined benefit plan guarantees employees a predetermined benefit based on salary and years of service. This security allows individuals to confidently plan for their future, knowing they will have a stable income stream during retirement.

The inclusive approach taken by the PSPP not only strengthens retirement security for individuals but also contributes to the overall economic well-being of our province. By providing workers with the stability and financial support they need in their retirement years, we foster a more resilient workforce and promote a brighter future for all Nova Scotians. In a time when financial uncertainty and retirement concerns are prevalent, this expansion of the PSPP represents a beacon of hope and a commitment to the well-being of our workforce, where every worker can build a secure and prosperous future.

This announcement is a fantastic news story highlighting retirement, the power of collaboration and the positive impact that thoughtful policy decisions can have on the lives of individuals and the broader community. It demonstrates that working together to improve retirement security can create a stronger and more prosperous Nova Scotia for all.
