Today is International Youth Day

August 12, 2024

On International Youth Day, the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL) reaffirms its dedication to empowering and supporting our youth and young workers in our province. The NSFL acknowledges Youth and Young Workers’ crucial role in shaping our world, highlighting their energy and innovative spirit as key drivers for transforming our labour and food systems towards sustainability.

The Young Workers of our province are not just the workforce of tomorrow but also integral players in today’s landscape. Their fresh perspectives, digital acumen, and innovative ideas have the potential to drive significant progress across various sectors, including agriculture and food production. However, the challenges faced by young workers must be urgently addressed. Unacceptable levels of unemployment, precarious job conditions, wage disparities, better benefits, pensions and workplace discrimination require immediate attention. The NSFL remains resolute in advocating for policies that safeguard the rights of young workers, ensuring fair wages, safe workplaces, and equal opportunities. We uphold the power of collective bargaining and union representation in securing these essential rights and conditions. Our commitment extends to promoting the inclusion of young workers in union activities and decision-making processes. Recognizing the profound impact of the climate crisis on Young Workers and their future means that the NSFL stands in solidarity with their advocacy for environmental justice. We pledge to align our labour practices with sustainable environmental standards, contributing to a greener and fairer future.

As we mark International Youth Day, we urge all stakeholders, including employers, unions, government bodies, and the wider community, to unite to cultivate a Nova Scotia where our Young Workers can work with dignity, safety, and equity, fostering a prosperous and sustainable tomorrow. Remember, our Young Workers are not just our future; they are our present.
