The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour proudly supports Fair Employment Week, October 21-25

October 22, 2024

This week highlights the urgent need for fair wages, comprehensive benefits, and increased full-time employment opportunities for all workers.

We advocate for wages that reflect the true value of workers’ contributions and ensure a decent standard of living. Fair wages are fundamental to reducing income inequality and fostering economic stability.

Access to comprehensive benefits, including health and defined benefit pension plans, is essential. Workers deserve the security that good benefits can provide in their personal and professional lives.

We call for more full-time positions to replace precarious part-time roles. Full-time employment offers not just stability, but also career growth, and financial security, which are crucial for workers’ well-being. It’s about more than just a job; it’s about a fulfilling career.

Workers can join unions to gain collective bargaining power to negotiate better wages, benefits, and working conditions. Unions provide a platform for workers to have a voice in their workplace and ensure they are treated with dignity and respect. Together, we can make a difference.

Unionized workers often earn higher wages and have better access to employer-sponsored benefits such as health and retirement plans. This “union wage premium” helps reduce economic inequality.

As we commemorate Fair Employment Week, we urge employers and policymakers to commit to these principles and ensure that all Nova Scotians can work with dignity and fairness.
