Statement on Stop Bullying Day from the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour
Today, on Stop Bullying Day, the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL) stands in unwavering solidarity with all those who face bullying, harassment, and intimidation in their workplaces and communities. Bullying is not just a personal issue; it’s a workplace issue that affects the mental health, safety, and well-being of all workers and undermines the collective power that unions work so hard to build. But together, in our solidarity, we are strong. For union members, standing up against bullying means standing up for the dignity and respect that every worker deserves. Whether it’s on the job or in our communities, bullying can have serious, long-lasting consequences, including depression, anxiety, absenteeism, and even physical health issues.
These impacts harm individuals and weaken our workplaces by fostering environments of fear and division rather than solidarity and cooperation. Unions have always been at the forefront, fighting for safer and fairer workplaces, including advocating for environments free from bullying. As union members, we are responsible for supporting our fellow workers who experience bullying. It’s important to remember that bullying can come from different directions, whether from a supervisor, a co-worker, customers or clients.
No matter the source, it must be addressed swiftly and seriously. That’s why the NSFL is unwavering in our commitment to raising awareness about bullying and pushing for stronger workplace policies that protect workers from bullying, violence and harassment at work. That’s also why the province must act on accepting the ILO – C 190 on Violence and Harassment Convention by the International Labour Organization, which the Canadian Government has ratified.
Workers must feel empowered to report bullying without fear of retaliation, and employers must be held accountable for creating safe and inclusive workplaces where everyone is treated with respect. We will not rest until these policies are in place, and we will continue to fight for your rights and safety. In our communities, standing up to bullying also means fostering a culture of kindness, acceptance, and understanding. The values driving the labour movement, justice, equality, and solidarity, should guide our actions at work and beyond. By standing up against bullying, we protect ourselves and our co-workers and set an example for future generations. On this Stop Bullying Day, let’s commit to making our workplaces and communities places where everyone can thrive without fear of bullying or harassment. Together, we can create a culture of respect and solidarity that benefits all workers.
