Statement of Solidarity for Striking Workers at IMP Aerospace Workers

August 16, 2024

We express unwavering support for the striking workers at IMP Aerospace, United Steelworkers’ members who courageously advocate for fair wages and workplace respect. The decision to strike is never made lightly, it reflects the deep frustration and unwavering resolve of workers facing the realities of a wage freeze amid escalating inflation.

The dedicated workforce at IMP Aerospace is the cornerstone of the company’s success. Their skills, hard work, and blood, sweat, and tears have long contributed to IMP’s success. Their sacrifices, particularly during the pandemic, have been significant. Yet, they have experienced a decline in real wages while the cost of living has surged for them and their families.

The wealthy owners’ reluctance to share the prosperity has spurred the workers to take strike action. These union members feel their contributions and sacrifices are unrecognized and undervalued by the company. Despite their steadfast dedication to the company, they are now faced with wage stagnation. This issue is not merely financial but reflects a fundamental lack of respect and acknowledgement for their pivotal role in the company and the economies of Amherst and surrounding areas. Amid the current economic landscape characterized by soaring prices of housing, food, and other essentials, it is evident that workers cannot bear the inflation burden alone. Corporations must ensure fair compensation for their employees, reflecting the true worth of their labour. The workers’ demands at IMP Aerospace are not only justifiable but imperative. They seek wages commensurate with the cost of living, rooted in the principle of dignity in employment.

In the Trade Union Movement, we recognize solidarity as our most potent weapon. When workers unite to push for change, they challenge the existing norms and pave the way for a fairer, more just workplace. The ongoing battle at IMP Aerospace symbolizes a broader campaign for workers’ rights. IMP needs to grasp the collective power of the 70,000 union members in Nova Scotia and the 3.3 million workers across Canada who stand in solidarity and will not allow IMP to force you into submission. We call on IMP Aerospace management to initiate dialogue with a sincere willingness to listen and resolve this conflict while acknowledging the invaluable contributions of its workforce.

To the workers at IMP Aerospace, we stand with you in solidarity. We believe that collectively, we can forge a future where every worker is esteemed, valued, and remunerated fairly.

Your perseverance inspires us all. Stay strong and much Solidarity.
