Statement from the NSFL on Cape Breton Pride
As the secretary treasurer of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL), I was pleased to join with many of our affiliated unions to celebrate with them in the Cape Breton Pride Parade on Saturday. This annual event is more than a parade; it’s a colourful and powerful display of solidarity, inclusion, and our union’s community pride. We marched with workers, families, and allies from across Cape Breton to show our unwavering support for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights.
For unions, Pride is not just one day or one parade. It’s part of our year-round commitment to equality, human rights, and safe workplaces for everyone. Union members know that the fight for fairness and justice is never over. The same values that drive our work – respect, dignity, and solidarity – are the values that guide our support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. In workplaces across Nova Scotia, unions have led the way in negotiating protections against discrimination, fighting harassment, and ensuring benefits and policies are inclusive of all workers, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.
Pride is also a time to remember that these rights were hard-won. They came through decades of activism, organizing, and refusing to be silent. The labour movement has stood alongside 2SLGBTQIA+ activists in these struggles, and we will continue to stand with them as new challenges arise. We know there are still far too many places where discrimination, hate, and exclusion persist. That’s why our message at Pride is clear: everyone deserves safety, respect, and equality – at work, at home, and in the community.
Cape Breton Pride Parade is always a joyful reminder of the strength we have when we come together. Colourful floats, marching bands, community groups, and union banners lined the streets, cheered on by thousands of people. The energy, laughter, and connection showed the best of what our province can be when we choose inclusion over division.
The NSFL thanks the Cape Breton Pride organizers for their hard work in making this celebration a success, and we thank all the union members who came out to march, volunteer, and represent our movement. Your presence matters, your voices matter, and together we send a message of hope and solidarity. That pride is both a celebration and a call to action. Let’s carry that spirit forward in our workplaces, our communities, and our union halls every day of the year.
