Statement from the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour on World Day for Decent Work – October 7, 2024

October 7, 2024

As we observe World Day for Decent Work on October 7, the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advocating for fair and dignified working conditions for all workers in our province and beyond. This annual observance reminds us of the ongoing struggles faced by workers globally and highlights the essential need for decent work that upholds the principles of equity, safety, and respect.

Decent work is not merely a lofty ideal but a fundamental human right. Every worker deserves the opportunity to earn a living wage, work in a safe environment, and enjoy the benefits of their labour. Unfortunately, many workers continue to face exploitation, precarious employment, and discrimination. In Nova Scotia, we witness firsthand the challenges posed by low wages, job insecurity, and a lack of access to essential benefits, which disproportionately affect marginalized communities such as [specific communities].

This year’s theme, “Empower Workers, Promote Fairness,” resonates deeply with our mission at the NSFL. We firmly believe that empowering workers is not just a goal, but a necessity for building a fairer and more just society. This empowerment comes through solid labour rights, the ability to organize, and the establishment of fair workplace policies. We call on all levels of government to prioritize protecting workers’ rights and ensure that legislation reflects the workforce’s needs.

We urge employers to embrace a culture of respect and fairness. By investing in their workers, providing adequate training, and fostering an inclusive environment, businesses cannot only enhance productivity but also [specific benefits for employers]. This can contribute to a thriving community and a more sustainable business model.
As we reflect on the importance of decent work, we must also acknowledge the intersectionality of labour issues. The fight for decent work is intertwined with broader social justice movements, including those advocating for gender equality, racial equity, and environmental sustainability. We must work collaboratively to dismantle systemic barriers that prevent workers from achieving their full potential.

On this World Day for Decent Work, let us reaffirm our commitment to creating a labour movement that champions the rights and dignity of all workers. Together, we can build a future where every individual has access to decent work, labour is valued, and our communities can prosper. The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour calls on everyone to join us in this vital mission. Together, we can make decent work a reality for all.
