Statement from the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour on Continuing Care Month and Continuing Care Week 2024

October 7, 2024

October is Continuing Care Month in Nova Scotia, and from October 7th to 11th, we celebrate Continuing Care Week under the theme “Compassion in Action: Enriching the lives of Nova Scotians.” This is a vital time to recognize the tremendous contributions of continuing care workers who provide essential care and support to some of our most vulnerable citizens. Whether they are working in long-term care homes, providing home care, or supporting those with disabilities, these workers are the backbone of our healthcare system.

Continuing care workers deliver more than just medical care, they provide comfort, companionship, and dignity to those in need. Their work is challenging, often both physically and emotionally, and it is done with incredible compassion. The theme this year, “Compassion in Action,” perfectly captures the essence of the work they do every day, enriching lives not only through their skills but also through their empathy and dedication.

But while we celebrate these workers, it is important to recognize the challenges they continue to face. Low wages, staff shortages, and inadequate working conditions are all too common in the continuing care sector. These issues not only affect the workers but also the quality of care they are able to provide. The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour stands with continuing care workers in their fight for better wages, safe staffing levels, and the resources they need to do their jobs effectively.

Governments and employers must do more to ensure that continuing care workers are supported, respected, and fairly compensated for the critical work they do. Investing in this sector is not just about improving conditions for workers; it is about ensuring that Nova Scotians receive the quality care they deserve.

As we mark Continuing Care Month and Week, let’s show our appreciation for these workers and push for the changes necessary to improve their working conditions. Compassion means standing up for the people who stand up for our loved ones. We owe them nothing less.
