Statement from the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour Occupational Health and Safety Committee on Safety and Health Week

May 2, 2025

The Federation’s Occupational Health and Safety Committee reminds all workers that Safety and Health Week starts on May 5th and runs until the 10th. It’s a good time to highlight and discuss the importance of Occupational Health and Safety Week for all workers. This week allows us to focus on creating safer workplaces and protecting the health and safety of all workers in our province. Occupational health and safety aren’t just rules; they’re about caring for each other. We all deserve to go to work and come home safe and healthy.

Sadly, many workers face hazards on the job every day. We must ensure everyone knows how to stay safe from slips, falls, and exposure to harmful substances. During Safety and Health Week, we encourage workers, employers, and communities to unite. It’s a time to discuss improving work environments through your workplace safety committee. Safety at work is everyone’s responsibility, and we encourage workers to take action.

Don’t be afraid to speak up if you see something wrong. Please don’t hesitate to report a potential hazard if you see one! Your voice matters, and it can help prevent accidents. Remember, reporting hazards is not just a duty but a powerful tool to ensure safety. To keep everyone safe, employers must also provide training and resources. It’s important to remember that safety is more than following rules. The goal is to create a workplace where everyone feels valued and protected. When you speak up about potential health and safety risks at work, you protect others. A safe workplace is a happy workplace. Let’s commit to making safety a priority every day, not just during Safety and Health Week, but ensuring every workplace is safe and that our workplace is an environment where everyone can thrive every day. I appreciate your dedication to this vital cause; we can make a difference.

Stay safe, and look out for one another!
