Statement in solidarity with Alberta teachers and against the use of the Notwithstanding Clause

October 28, 2025

The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour stands in full solidarity with the Alberta Teachers’ Association and all educators in Alberta who are standing up for their rights, their students, and public education. Teachers deserve respect, fair treatment, and the freedom to speak up for what’s right, not to be silenced or undermined by their government.

The Alberta government’s decision to use the Notwithstanding Clause is a severe attack on workers’ rights and on democracy itself. This clause was never intended to be used as a weapon against individuals who are simply advocating for fairness and equality. It is a tool of last resort, not a political shortcut to trample constitutional rights and silence opposition.

By invoking the Notwithstanding Clause to override court decisions, Premier Danielle Smith’s government is sending a dangerous message that workers’ rights, Charter protections, and the voices of educators can be set aside for political gain. This is unacceptable in a free and fair country.

Teachers, all educators and the Alberta Federation of Labour across Alberta and across Canada need our full support. They are not only fighting for fair treatment and respect on the job, but they are also fighting for a stronger public education system for our kids. When teachers advocate for improved learning conditions, smaller class sizes, and the resources students need to succeed, they are standing up for all of us.

The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour joins the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the broader labour movement in condemning this abuse of power. We urge the Alberta government to reconsider this decision, respect the rights of all workers, and uphold the principles of fairness, democracy, and quality education that Canadians hold dear.

Solidarity with Alberta teachers, your fight is our fight, and our kids’ future depends on it.
