NSFL calls on Premier to establish task force to address potential trade tariffs

January 23, 2025

Halifax, NS – The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL) is calling on Premier Houston to take proactive steps to address the potential economic fallout from trade tariffs that could severely impact Nova Scotia’s industries, workers, and communities.

Danny Cavanagh, President of the NSFL, has written to the Premier urging immediate action to establish a multilateral task force to assess and mitigate the risks associated with potential trade tariffs.

These tariffs pose a critical threat to Nova Scotia’s economy, with the potential to destabilize key industries and result in significant job losses across the province. “We know the Premier has been working with provincial counterparts on a national response, and we appreciate those efforts,” said Cavanagh. “However, it is essential that we take specific and immediate action here in Nova Scotia to protect our workers, businesses, and communities from the potentially devastating impacts of these trade tariffs.

Cavanagh has proposed the formation of a provincial task force that would include representatives from Indigenous organizations, labour unions, and industrial and business leaders. The task force would work collaboratively to:

•             Assess the full impact of potential trade tariffs on Nova Scotia’s industries and workforce.

•             Develop strategies to mitigate job losses and economic instability.

•             Coordinate support for affected workers, businesses, and communities.

“By bringing together key stakeholders, we can develop effective, proactive strategies to safeguard our economy and ensure a prosperous future for all Nova Scotians,” added Cavanagh saying that “This is a time for leadership, collaboration, and decisive action to protect the livelihoods of thousands of workers and their families.”

The Federation of Labour is urging the Premier to act promptly in assembling this task force. “Nova Scotians are counting on us to work together to address this issue before it becomes a crisis”.
