NS NDP put forward anti-scab legislation

March 20, 2024

Yesterday was a significant milestone for union members in Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia New Democratic Party introduced anti-scab legislation.

This legislation is a beacon of fairness and equity in collective bargaining, reasserting the right to withdraw one’s labour as a Charter right in our country. It directly tackles the issue of employers exploiting scabs, a practice that gives them an unfair advantage. Instead of engaging in fair negotiations, they opt for replacement or ‘scab’ workers. This legislation is our firm stand against such unfair practices.

As the President of the Federation of Labour in Nova Scotia, today is a historic day for the trade union movement. We must intensify our efforts to garner support for this legislation from all parties, just as the federal government received unanimous support for similar legislation. Your support is crucial in this journey.

I express my deepest gratitude to the federal and provincial new democrats for this legislation and all unions who have stood with us in this fight. Your support has been invaluable, and together, we will continue to champion anti-scab legislation in Nova Scotia. Our collective efforts can and will make a difference, ensuring fair treatment for all workers in our province.
