Nova Scotia Federation of Labour Statement on World Teachers’ Day

October 5, 2025

On World Teachers’ Day, the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour proudly salutes all teachers and education workers across our province and around the world. This day is a time to recognize the people who dedicate their lives to helping our children, youth, and adults learn, grow, and build a better future.

Teachers inspire, support, and often step in where our social systems fall short. They help students from every background find their voices and believe in their own potential. Whether in classrooms, universities, community centres, or online spaces, teachers are the backbone of a fair and informed society. This year’s theme, “The teachers we need for the education we want,” reminds us that quality education depends on respecting, supporting, and valuing those who provide it. Yet in Nova Scotia and across Canada, teachers continue to face growing class sizes, shrinking budgets, and increasing workloads. Many are coping with higher levels of violence and aggression in classrooms, often without the proper supports or staff to keep everyone safe. These are not isolated incidents; they reflect a system that’s stretched far too thin.

We must also recognize the vital contributions of education support staff, including teacher assistants, early childhood educators, and specialists who work one-on-one with students who need extra help. They play an essential role in making schools inclusive, yet they are often underpaid and undervalued, despite carrying heavy emotional and physical workloads.

Our university and college educators also deserve recognition. They mentor the next generation of workers, professionals, and community leaders, often under contract conditions that are unstable and insecure. These faculty and instructors are essential to public education and deserve fair pay, academic freedom, and respect for their work.

The NSFL stands in solidarity with all teachers and education workers across the province who fight every day for fair wages, safe working conditions, and the resources students deserve. When we defend them, we defend public education itself. Governments must listen and invest in our schools, colleges, and universities, rather than privatizing, cutting, or shifting costs. Education is not an expense; it’s an investment in the strength of our communities and our democracy. Every learner deserves qualified, respected educators and safe, well-funded public institutions. To every teacher, assistant, professor, and education worker in Nova Scotia: thank you for your dedication, compassion, and resilience. You make a difference every single day, and your work shapes the future of this province.
