Nova Scotia Federation of Labour Statement on Family Violence Prevention Week
The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour acknowledges the importance of Family Violence Prevention Week, which takes place from February 13th to 19th. Family violence occurs in various and frightening forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and sexual abuse, and far too often, it happens behind closed doors, hidden from public view.
Our unions have been raising awareness about domestic abuse and family violence for a long time. Survivors deserve our unwavering support, and we will continue to advocate for systemic change, change to address the root causes of domestic abuse. As unions we have been asking for government to enact more paid days for victims of domestic abuse. We know paid time from work is essential for individuals to escape dangerous situations to leave and paid leave is critical in ensuring survivors can prioritize their safety and well-being.
Tragically, in Nova Scotia, we have witnessed a disturbing increase in the number of women killed in contexts of domestic violence. Its a huge sign that there is an urgent need for systemic change. our society must become committed to fostering a culture where violence and domestic abuse is not tolerated, and one where survivors are supported. It is not merely enough to talk about family violence and domestic abuse; we must take concerted action to change and eliminate it. It’s our collective responsibility to help create a safe environment for all. Its going to be our united voices that ensure that family violence and domestic abuse no longer is tolerated and that victims no longer feel isolated or ashamed but supported and validated by their government and community.
Let us all commit to becoming advocates for change within our circles, our unions, and the broader community. Legislative improvements will continue to be a priority for our unions, improvements that will create a safer, more supportive society. We all want a future free from family violence and domestic abuse as Nova Scotians. A province and Country where everyone can thrive without fear of harm. Together, we can make a difference. Let us unite against family violence and domestic abuse, not just this week, but every week.
