Federation Presidents Convene in Halifax

July 15, 2024

The Canadian Provincial and Territories Federations of Labour of Presidents are convening in Halifax during the Premiers’ meetings, with a unified goal of representing the concerns of workers from all corners of the country. This gathering serves as a platform for these leaders to give a collective voice to the pressing issues faced by workers nationwide.

One of the central focuses of this meeting is to combat the growing trend of privatization in the public service sector. Recognizing the importance of accessible and quality public services, the presidents are determined to stand up against the privatization efforts. They firmly believe that public services should remain in the hands of the government, ensuring that they are accessible to all Canadians and not driven solely by profit motives.

Additionally, the federations of labour are dedicated to fighting for paid sick days and provincial anti-scab legislation. Acknowledging the importance of protecting workers’ rights, they understand the need for legislation that guarantees fair treatment and safeguards against exploitation. By championing paid sick days and anti-scab legislation, they aim to ensure that workers have access to necessary time off and are protected from replacement labour during strikes.

Furthermore, the federations of labour recognize the impact of inflation on workers’ income and the necessity of decent wages, benefits, and pensions. With the rising cost of living, it is crucial for workers to have a reliable income that can adequately support their families. They are committed to advocating for fair wages, comprehensive benefits packages, and secure pension plans, ensuring that workers can provide for their loved ones and have a stable financial future.

In Halifax, these presidents come together, united by their determination to address the concerns of many workers across the country.
