Earth Day statement from the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour

April 22, 2025

Every year, on April 22, people celebrate Earth Day. It’s a time to think about our planet and the environment and the steps we can take to help protect it.

Here in Nova Scotia, we are fortunate to live in a province with beautiful coastlines, forests, and natural beauty. However, we are also facing the impacts of climate change right at home. Rising sea levels are a big concern in Nova Scotia. Our province has many communities along the coast, from larger cities like Halifax to smaller towns like Lunenburg and Yarmouth. These places are not just where we live and work but are part of our identity. If we don’t take action against climate change, rising sea levels could flood our streets, damage homes, and threaten the livelihoods of those who rely on fishing, tourism, and other important industries.

We’re already seeing the effects of climate change in our province. Storms are getting stronger and causing more damage to our communities. Coastal erosion is wearing away some of our shorelines. The water around us continues to rise, putting our roads, bridges, and buildings at serious risk.

As workers and residents of Nova Scotia, we believe it’s crucial to take action now. This means supporting stronger environmental policies that reduce pollution and protect our natural resources. It also means helping workers and industries transition to greener jobs and cleaner energy. We can tackle climate change while still growing our economy and creating good jobs for the future.

Earth Day reminds us everyone is responsible for protecting our planet, but we call on governments, businesses, and communities to work together. In Nova Scotia, we must take these challenges seriously and act quickly. Rising sea levels and severe weather are not just problems for the future; they are already here.

This Earth Day, let’s commit to protecting Nova Scotia’s beautiful environment for the next generation. By taking action now, we can help ensure that our province remains a safe and lovely place to live and work for many years. The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour stands with all workers and communities fighting for a sustainable, fair, and healthy future.
