NSFL President Danny Cavanagh honours miners at Davis Day ceremony in Glace Bay

June 12, 2024

As the President of the Federation of Labour in Nova Scotia, I was honoured to attend the ceremony for Davis Day. This event, with its immense historical and cultural significance for the labour movement in our province, is a testament to the unwavering support and commitment of the Federation of Labour and Workers’ Rights.

Davis Day is a day of remembrance and tribute to the sacrifices and contributions of the coal miners, who dedicated their lives to their work, often enduring hazardous conditions and facing significant risks to their safety. It is a day that resonates deeply with the labour community, reminding us of the struggles and triumphs of the workers who fought for fair labour practices and better working conditions. By attending the ceremony, I aimed to honour the fallen miners’ memory and stand in solidarity with their families and the broader labour community.

It was an opportunity to pay homage to the courage and resilience of those who came before us and to reaffirm our commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of workers in Nova Scotia. The ceremony was a testament to the Federation of Labour’s active engagement with the community and our unwavering dedication to preserving the historical legacy of the labour movement in our province.

It underscored our steadfast support for initiatives that uphold workers’ rights and promote a safe and equitable work environment for all. In essence, the Davis Day ceremony was a profoundly meaningful gesture, symbolizing the Federation of Labour’s deep reverence for the past, our unwavering solidarity with the present labour force, and our resolute aspirations for a more just and prosperous future for workers in Nova Scotia.
