December 10 is International Human Rights Day

December 10, 2025

On this International Human Rights Day, The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour reaffirms its commitment to standing with workers, communities, and people around the world in the ongoing fight for dignity, equality, and justice for all.

December 10th is celebrated annually as International Human Rights Day. It commemorates that day in 1948 when the United Nations unanimously adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. John Peters Humphrey, a Canadian, played a major role in the drafting of the Declaration as the first Director of the United Nations Division of Human Rights. The first Article of the declaration remains as resonant as ever:  “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”

Human rights are the foundation of a just and equitable society. However, we continue to witness alarming attacks on these rights, with people facing violence, discrimination, exploitation, and systemic inequalities.

Whether challenging anti-union legislation, advocating for stronger labour protections in trade agreements, or supporting workers in their struggles for decent work and justice globally, the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour is dedicated to advancing the rights of working people everywhere.

Human Rights are a powerful force for good. Upholding human rights isn’t only about addressing present injustices, it’s about driving significant social change by reshaping unjust societies and empowering marginalized groups. By advancing human rights, we create a fairer world.
