NSFL President Danny Cavanagh to join picket line in Cape Breton Thursday in solidarity with striking trades workers

SYDNEY, NS — Nova Scotia Federation of Labour President Danny Cavanagh will be in Cape Breton this Thursday to join striking unionized construction workers on the picket line and deliver a strong message of solidarity on behalf of the Federation’s 70,000 members across the province.
“For the first time in decades, these skilled tradespeople have had to put down their tools and take a stand,” says Cavanagh. “They are fighting for fair wages, safer working conditions, and the basic ability to provide for their families in the face of rising costs. I’ll be there to let them know they’re not alone; all of organized labour in Nova Scotia stands with them.”
The striking workers, represented by the Cape Breton Island Building and Construction Trades Council, walked off the job this week after negotiations with the Nova Scotia Construction Labour Relations Association stalled. They are seeking a fair contract that reflects their skill, sacrifices, and the rising cost of living.
“These are the workers who build our hospitals, our schools, and our communities. They spend their wages locally, drive our regional economy, and help build a stronger GDP for Cape Breton. Union jobs benefit everyone, not just union members.”
Cavanagh will be on the picket line Thursday to meet with workers and show the Federation’s ongoing support. “I’m also calling on the employer group to return to the bargaining table in good faith to reach a deal that respects workers and the vital work they do.”
