The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour on Increased Funding for Domestic Violence Initiatives

April 7, 2025

The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL) is happy to see the government putting more money into programs that help fight domestic violence. This is crucial in helping people in our communities affected by this serious issue. Domestic violence affects many people and families in Nova Scotia, and it doesn’t just stay at home. It also impacts schools, workplaces, and neighbourhoods. For years, unions and advocacy groups have been asking for more support for those who experience domestic violence, including better leave options for victims and more funding for local organizations that provide essential services to those who need help.

We are grateful that the government is taking action on this issue. The NSFL is encouraged to see that the government focuses on more paid leave and funding to help those facing domestic violence. This will help survivors feel safe to seek help without worrying about losing their jobs or income. This increased funding will help provide support to leave abusive situations and move forward.

We are happy that more money will go to organizations that help people facing domestic violence. These groups work hard to provide shelter, counselling, and support to those in need. With this funding, they can expand their services and help even more people. While this is an important step forward, we know there is still much to do. The NSFL is committed to working with the government, community groups, and our unions to ensure that this funding is used effectively and that we continue to address the root causes of domestic violence.

Together, we can create a future where everyone in Nova Scotia can live free from violence and harassment. On behalf of our affiliates and 70,000 members across the province, we thank the government for this important step and look forward to continuing this vital work.
